Different Types of Acne and How to Treat Them

We’ve all been there, from a pesky pimple to a stubborn blackhead, acne not only causes unwanted bumps on your skin but can take an emotional toll too. In order to fight these pesky bumps, you should know the best ways to treat them and remove them. There are two types of acne, Inflammatory and Noninflammatory. Knowing the type of acne you commonly have can help you easily determine the type of treatment you should have.

Blackheads and Whiteheads

Part of the noninflammatory acne group, these stubborn little monsters are caused when your pores become clogged with a combination of sebum and dead skin cells. They are considered noninflammatory because they usually don’t cause swelling. Both whiteheads and blackheads are caused by the same thing, however, with blackheads, the top of the pore remains open revealing the black color seen on the surface. With whiteheads the top of the pore closes, making the bump look as if it is protruding from the skin. Noninflammatory acne often reacts well to over the counter products, but whiteheads can be a bit more stubborn. Our Isolaz acne therapy treatment does a great job of clearing out your pores. Isolaz combines the technique of painless broadband light with a vacuum to achieve a deep clean unlike any other. Isolaz is quick and long lasting for all skin types. At Premier Spa we will also customize a home skin care regimen to complement your treatment.

Papules and Pustules

Making up part of the inflammatory acne group, papules and pustules are formed when the walls surrounding your pores break down creating red inflamed bumps on the skin. Papules are often hard and tender, while pustules are filled with pus and topped with yellow or whiteheads. Inflammatory acne can often be very painful and hard to get rid of. Products containing benzoyl-peroxide often help to reduce swelling and remove harmful bacteria.

Nodules

Nodules occur when clogged and inflamed pores endure further irritation and grow larger. Due to the depth of the acne under the skin, nodules often cannot be treated at home. In order to prevent scarring or pigmentation, you should have these treated as soon as possible by a professional.

Cysts

The most painful of the inflammatory group, cysts are formed from a combination of sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria. These clogged pores occur deeper in the skin than nodules and are often very painful to touch. These large red and white bumps are the largest type of acne and usually result from a severe infection. Cysts are also the most likely to scar. Cysts can either be treated through a prescription medication or by extraction. At Premier Spa we do have extraction services that can also be paired with microdermabrasion and facial treatments.
