Steps of IPL Treatments
High-intensity pulse light therapy, known as IPL, uses different wavelengths of light the clear the skin. The pulsed light can reach down to the second layer of the skin, without harming the top layer. The light is absorbed by the pigmented skin cells and converted to heat, which destroys unwanted pigment. This treatment is great for treating freckles, birthmarks, varicose veins, rosacea, and age or sunspots. It can be performed on almost all areas of the skin, but the most popular are the face, neck, chest, arms, and hands.
How to Prepare
The first step of an IPL treatment is scheduling a consultation. When you meet with one of our skilled aestheticians, they will examine your skin and create a treatment plan that is perfect for you. Before treatment, you will need to avoid tanning beds, waxing, chemical peels and drugs that increase bleeding risk such as ibuprofen.
Steps of the Treatment
When you come in for your first IPL treatment, your aesthetician will begin by cleaning your skin. Next, a cool gel is applied and you are ready to begin. The pulsed light uses a combination of radiofrequency and broad-spectrum light to fade the unwanted pigment. Every treatment lasts 20 to 30 minutes, and we recommend three to five treatments that are spaced four to six weeks apart.
The Results
There is no downtime with IPL, so patients can resume their normal activities immediately. A few hours after treatment you may notice your skin is red like a sunburn, but this will only last a couple of hours. You will want to avoid hot water until the skin is fully healed. Also, you may notice an increase in pigmentation, and this is because the pulsed light removed it and it is now rising to the surface. Furthermore, you will notice a gradual improvement in your skin’s tone and texture as new healthy skin cells evolve.
