Explaining the Jessner Peel

Explaining the Jessner Peel

The Jessner peel is a safe, effective way to maintain the skin. It is defined as a medium-depth chemical peel, meaning it falls between superficial peels and deep peels. Superficial peels have little to no downtime while deep peels require weeks, perhaps months, of downtime. The Jessner solution affects only the upper layer of the dermis in a controlled manner.

The Solution

A Jessner’s peel is a combination of salicylic acid, resorcinol, and lactic acid. Salicylic acid dissolves hardened skin cells within the epidermal layer of skin, lactic acid adds hydration, and resorcinol is used due to its natural antiseptic properties. The solution is a leave-in, self-neutralizing solution. It must be left completely undisturbed, with no water or oil, in the skin for at least six to eight hours post-treatment. The peeling process will take several days to complete its course.

Benefits

The Jessner peel is used to reduce dark patches and age spots, even out skin tone, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the appearance of scars, and treat melasma, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars. The solution triggers an inflammatory response from the skin layers below the top-most layer. This leads to the removal of actinic keratoses, or sun damage, and the improvement of minor hyperpigmentation, scarring, wrinkles, and elasticity.

Preparation

Before a Jessner peel, Premier Spa & Laser Center requires a consultation with an aesthetician as there are contraindications that may make someone not an ideal candidate for this peel. You may be asked to follow a certain skincare plan for two to four weeks before your peel to reduce side effects and increase the effectiveness of the peel.

During the Procedure

To begin your chemical peel, your skin will be cleaned thoroughly to remove any products or oil. The peel is typically applied with a gauze, brush, or cotton-tipped applicator. You may feel burning or stinging and your skin may feel tight and dry. It may be sensitive for a few days following the procedure.

After the Peel

Following the peel, your skin may be red, swollen, and tight. Your skin may develop brown batches, but these spots rarely remain after the skin has healed. It may take five to seven days to develop new skin and can take 7-14 days to heal completely to see full results.
